The Healthy Initiatives Program
Partnership is a collaboration of seven municipalities who have joined
together to offer healthy life choices to municipal employees. Fall River,
Swansea, Somerset, Westport, Attleboro, North Attleboro and Mansfield make up
the collaboration that is funded by the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health through the
Tobacco Control Program.
Program Goals
The Municipal Employee Wellness Program or the Healthy Initiatives Program Partnership (H.I.P.P.) is a pilot program made reality by the commitment of Governor Deval Patrick and Health Commissioner John Auerbach to the health and wellbeing of the people of Massachusetts. In this case, the municipal employees whose work maintains our cities and towns, addresses the needs of our elderly, our veterans, and through the public schools, our children, and therefore our future. H.I.P.P. brings together 7 Boards of Health from Attleboro to Westport to create mutually agreeable plans to address the needs and interests of municipal workers and their families. Our goals in this first year are to:
- Research and share knowledge regarding City/Town worksite
environments, health risks, and needs and interests regarding wellness of
municipal employees.
Municipal Employee Wellness Steering Committee- Meets monthly
- Invites membership in and facilitates local Wellness Committee
- Conducts environmental and other surveys to inform wellness projects.
- Provide screening and health risk assessments to all employees
of member municipalities.
Know Your Numbers- Cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar- what these numbers are and what they tell us is essential to maintaining our health and preventing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and all related illness. Southcoast Hospital Group's Cardiac Prevention Program is providing screenings and health risk assessments to employees in their various departments in Fall River, Swansea, Somerset and Westport. In April, the Cardiac Prevention Program will begin to reach out to Attleboro, Mansfield and North Attleboro.
- Nothing is more important to maintaining health and prevention
of multiple diseases than to quit smoking. H.I.P.P.
achieves this important goal by:
Smoking Cessation- Increasing awareness of health insurance smoking cessation plans and coverage.
- Increasing awareness and improving access to local, statewide and internet programs to support smoking quit attempts.
- Promoting or establishing programs to address smoking cessation
- Establishing a coalition of community resources for Tobacco Treatment (see member list).
- Encouraging physical activity, improving eating habits and
nutrition, while combating obesity:
Eat Well- Keep Active- This is achieved through programs offered or in the planning stages in each of the member municipalities. (see your town/city's program listing)
- City and Town workers have access to a number of benefits by
virtue of their employment. They may not be aware of the value of some of those
benefits. H.I.P.P. seeks to inform them and encourage
use of employee benefits by City/Town workers and their
families.
Health Resources Awareness- Employee Assistance Programs-EAP (see your Town/City listing for benefits)
- Rebates and discounts on Gym Membership, Weight Loss Programs, Bike Helmets and others.
- Availability of smoking cessation plans and benefits.
- H.I.P.P. is available to work with
employee groups on special programming such as:
Special Programs- Employee Assistance Programs-EAP (see your Town/City listing for benefits)
- Weight Watchers at Work
- Creating special offers with the YMCA (Attleboro) or other Town/City wellness organizations.
